The group was constituted in February 2003. Our main concern at the time was the poor state of the roads and pavements throughout the area, and lack of sufficient car parking. It took about 3 years of negotiations with Highland Council but eventually the old dangerous cobbles were removed and replaced with block paving and resurfaced pavements on the main thoroughfare through Kirkside. Also some extra parking bays were incorporated.
Our other main aim was to enhance the entrance to Kirkside with some landscaping.
We received a grant for this from Awards for All and the first phase is done. A uniquiely designed seat was gifted and the planters were built alongside. Further planting is in hand so that by next summer it should an asset to the area.
The grant also allowed us to take our senior citizens on a trip to Pitlochry Festival Theatre where we enjoyed the musical ‘Memory Lane’ and a lovely meal. We also gave the younger children a party where Bubbles the Clown was the highlight.
Over the years we have designed calendars and newsletters which were given freely to all our residents.
The group was involved in WASP and the interest is now continuing with the Alness Transition Town project.
