There are growing signs of affordable housing shortages in the Highland area.
- In Highland there were 19,762 social rented sector homes in 2007-2008.
- Right to Buy resulted in the loss of 60,45 affordable homes between 1997-1998 and 2007-2008.
- There were 612 households living in temporary accommodation in March 2009.
- There were 1,813 homeless households in 2008-2009.
- The number of households on the council waiting list was 8,777 in March 2009, but only 810 new lets were available in 2008-2009. This means that it would take 10.8 years to clear the current waiting list.
- The total number of households on the main council housing list, which includes the transfer list, was 11,345 in March 2009.
- In April 2009 the average house price in Highland was £147,204.
Highland needs more affordable homes.
